Michael Leslie, Secretary
O. Michael Leslie is a former union leader, activist, and labor educator with a background marked by enthusiasm and success in the development of worker rights programs, union strengthening and health & safety training in the U.S. and West Africa.
As a former program officer with the Solidarity Center, AFL-CIO, he has developed a broad range of programs designed to strengthen the internal democracy, mobilizing, organizing, and gender equality capacities of unions in Nigeria, Liberia, and Cameroon. Currently, he serves as advisor and photographer for the Black Worker and Wellness Center (BWWC) in Washington DC., and consultant to union and community groups.
In Michigan, he was elected vice president of United Automobile Workers Union (UAW) Local 735 where he organized a movement of GM workers who successfully transformed their workplace with a Health & Safety campaign that documented workplace cancers, and reduced toxic exposures to hazardous substances. He has served as a health & safety instructor at the United Steel Workers of America (USW) International Union Health, Safety, and Environment annual conference. In 2001, Michael directed The Labor School at Wayne State University's Labor Studies Center where he developed, administered, and facilitated the training of participants representing 40+ local trade unions.
Michael earned a B.A. from Eastern Michigan University, and a M.A. from Wayne State University. He is a member of OPEIU Local 2, UAW Local 735, ONE DC, the Black Workers and Wellness Center, and serves as board member with the Labor Heritage Foundation, AFI-CIO. He is a freelance writer and photographer and lives in Washington DC with his wife, Llenda Jackson-Leslie.
