About this event

Dorothea Lange, one of the nation's greatest documentary photographers, worked for the New Deal’s Resettlement Administration during the Great Depression. She drove the backroads of California with a camera and notebook documenting the stories of those displaced by poverty, dust and bigotry. Lange had little interest in classifying her photographs as art: she made them to affect social change. Shortly before her death in 1965, Lange spoke at UC Berkeley. “Someone showed me photos of migrant farmworkers they had just taken,” she said. “They look just like what I made in the ‘30s.”

Lange's archive has been reborn for the stage as "Last West: Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange,” a multi-media production based on her journals and photographs.
