Movie theater workers at St. Louis’ Alamo Drafthouse are poised to vote to unionize, citing complaints of cut hours, fewer tips and lack of respect from management.
Logan Allgood, a bartender at the local Alamo Drafthouse theater, said one of workers’ most pressing complaints is about the new QR code ordering model the company launched this spring.
He said he’s seen colleagues lose out on hours and tips since the company rolled out its QR code system so customers place their orders online with their phones, instead of directly with a server.
He’s hoping that by unionizing, workers have a bigger say in changes at the theater. He said he would prefer Alamo Drafthouse to use a hybrid model where customers can order on their phones before the movie begins but servers would handle orders once the movie starts.
