Workers at Double Fine, the Xbox game studio behind Psychonauts, have filed to form a union with the Communications Workers of America.
According to Aftermath , the studio filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on May 7 covering all 42 regular full-time and part-time employees. Workers are also seeking voluntary recognition from Microsoft, which acquired Double Fine in 2019.
In a statement to Aftermath, CWA said workers organized to “preserve and extend [their] commitments to creative excellence, diversity and inclusion, and worker quality of life,” adding that Microsoft has agreed to remain neutral during the organizing effort.
Double Fine joins a growing wave of unionization efforts across Microsoft-owned game studios. In recent years, workers at Blizzard, ZeniMax and other Xbox-related studios have unionized with CWA, including more than 500 World of Warcraft workers and hundreds of developers on Overwatch and Diablo teams.
Founded by game designer Tim Schafer, Double Fine is known for story-driven games including Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2.
