Labor Artist and Historian Bill Yund Dies at 83

Harold Phillips | Published on 5/14/2026

The Pennsylvania labor movement is mourning the loss of artist, illustrator and cartoonist Bill Yund, whose work brought labor history — and humor — to generations of workers and activists.

“His artwork, illustrations and cartoons brought a ray of light and some cheer to the workers of Pennsylvania,” wrote Rosemary Trump, noting Yund’s longtime involvement with Heat & Frost Insulators Local 2, the Pennsylvania Labor History Society and the Battle of Homestead Foundation.

Yund was widely respected for using art and storytelling to make labor history accessible to broad audiences. The Battle of Homestead Foundation announced that it will honor Yund’s life and work during this year’s commemoration of the 1892 Homestead steel strike.

The event, marking the 134th anniversary of the Battle of Homestead, will take place Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the historic PumpHouse on East Waterfront Drive in Homestead, Pennsylvania. Organizers say the program will remember both the struggle of steelworkers and community members for living wages, health and safety protections and the eight-hour day — and Yund’s role in preserving that history through art.

Admission is free.
