The Bread & Roses Heritage Festival in Lawrence, Massachusetts is once again partnering with young artists from Movement City and Lawrence CommunityWorks to create this year’s festival logo — continuing a tradition that connects labor history, art and community creativity.
This year’s design was created by Franny, a freshman in high school who has participated in Movement City programs for the past three years.
“These last three years in the program have been the best of my life,” Franny said. “Movement City has watched my confidence grow.”
Franny said the design was inspired by both the Movement City building itself and the broader Lawrence community.
“The inspiration for this logo came from my connection to the Movement City building itself — specifically, the way the bricks are arranged,” she explained. “The word ‘community’ also reminded me of my own community at Movement City.”
The logo features hands reaching together beneath the phrase “Built by Labor, Powered by Community.”
“I chose to depict hands because I feel it is the simplest way to represent the community of Lawrence,” Franny said. “‘Built by Labor Powered by Community’ represents that the people you’re close with are the people who support you and your creations.”
Festival organizers say merchandise featuring the new logo will be available soon.
The annual Bread & Roses Heritage Festival celebrates Lawrence’s immigrant and labor history, including the historic 1912 Bread and Roses textile strike.
