Scientific American Workers Announce Intent to Join WGAE

Harold Phillips | Published on 4/19/2026

The staff behind Scientific American are organizing and requesting that management voluntarily recognize the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) as its bargaining representative.

Reporters, editors, producers and other staff who produce both the digital and print products for the science magazine went public on Monday. The bargaining unit, SciAm Union—which includes approximately 40 workers—requested recognition from Springer Nature management so they could continue to provide important and reliable journalism.

“Just as mitochondria power the cell (a concept famously coined in our pages), we power this historic institution,” workers said in a letter to management. “In an era when clear, accurate information is more important than ever, our work helps make scientific findings understandable, supports informed decision-making and contributes to social progress. We believe that a strong, supported staff is paramount to continuing this work at the highest level.”
