Staff at ProPublica Authorize Strike

Harold Phillips | Published on 3/27/2026

Members of the ProPublica Guild  part of NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003 - have overwhelmingly authorized a strike in order to secure a first contract. The bargaining unit includes journalists, videographers, development professionals, copy editors and other workers at the nonprofit newsroom. Staff have been bargaining for their first collective bargaining agreement for two and a half years, but management has yet to settle a deal with fair wages, standard job security protections, seniority provisions in layoffs or artificial intelligence protections.
“We are ready to walk off the job to show management that their refusal to agree to basic protections will not be tolerated and that we will not accept anything less than a fair contract,” said Agnel Philip, a data reporter and unit chair of ProPublica Guild, in a press release.

“Our union stands united in supporting ProPublica Guild’s efforts to win a fair and just contract, including the possibility of a strike,” said Susan DeCarava, president of The NewsGuild of New York. “We’re ready to hit the picket line. It’s up to management to decide what happens next.”
