The Cradle Will Rock

cradlehomeposterThe Cradle Will Rock is one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of American theatre. This dynamic musical, a comic morality tale, follows the citizens of Steeltown, USA as they corrupt themselves under the control of Mr. Mister, the powerful steel magnate.

Composer Mark Blitzstein described it as “a labor opera composed in a style that falls somewhere between realism, romance, vaudeville, comic strip, Gilbert and Sullivan, Brecht, and agit-prop.”
This piece was first commissioned by the WPA, then shut down by the federal government under allegations of communism for supporting the labor agenda. With such a heritage to the show, we want to encourage local unions and laborers to come see it, and the theater is offering a substantial discount.
