The Joe Hill Award, honors leaders and artists who have contributed to the successful integration of arts and culture in the labor movement. Given every year at the Great Labor Arts Exchange it is awarded to persons based on their dedication, participation, and promotion of labor, labor arts, culture, organizing, and/or history.

Program Details
31st Annual Great Labor Arts Exchange (GLAE)
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday (‘til Midnight) June 21-23, 2009
The Great Labor Arts Exchange is a gathering of union and community activists, rank and filers, organizers, cultural workers, artists, labor educators, and youth who use, or support the use of, songs, art, poetry, theater, skits, posters, cartoons, and film to strengthen the labor movement. You don’t need to be an artist or performer to attend or perform!!!
- Nourish your soul in an atmosphere of creativity and solidarity;
- Celebrate the rich cultural heritage of working people;
- Network with labor musicians, organizers, performers, visual artists, and writers.
GLAE participants enjoy workshops (such as):
- Basic Songwriting/Advanced Songwriting/The Making of a Parody
- Working Artists: Making art work and keep you working (a Business 101 for Artists)
- Labor Music & Songs 101 (Songs every union member/supporter should know)
- Oral History/Story Telling
- Labor Art Space
- The Power of the Spoken Word – Theatre, Poetry, and Performance
- Arts Exchange and Song Swap
- Using U-Tube, Internet, and online networking sites to build your base and get your message out
Participants will:
- Meet other unionists from all over the country and abroad
- Exchange experiences and ideas for artistic expression;
- Collaborate or engage with other artists, performers, and activists;
- Share resources with organizers and artists from the Conference on Creative Organizing;
- Return home rejuvenated, energized and inspired with a battery of new ideas and tools that will make your artistry more engaging and infused.

June 23th Day of Action:
Participants from the Conference on Creative Organizing and the Great Labor Arts Exchange will converge in the DC Metropolitan area and participate in an ACTION to bring attention and energy to issues currently facing working people, our country, and our leadership. This action will focus on timely topics and issues such as: “The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA),” “Comprehensive (Just and Humane) Immigration Reform,” “Poverty,” “Health Care Reform,” and “Education Reform,” Join us as we gather at the National Labor College and travel to a site in the metro area where we will stage an action to “Raise Your Voice: And Be Heard!!”
June 23, 2009, “Raise Your Voices and Be Heard Concert” 7PM
featuring: Joe Hill Award & the DC Labor Chorus, Charm City Labor Chorus, and special performances by participants of the Great Labor Arts Exchange, Camp Solidarity, Music Students from Shepard Elementary School, and the Conference on Creative Organizing.

ON CAMPUS HOUSING AND MEAL PLAN- June 20-23, 2009 (check out June 24, Noon)
Rates include: NLC facilities, feature hotel-like amenities, 24-hour front desk services, hospitality, cable TV and high-speed Internet access, bar & game room, exercise room, all-you-care-to-eat meals.
OFF CAMPUS HOUSING: Will live off campus and pay for meals separately. All inclusive meals package are $45.00 p/day or can be purchased separately for: breakfast $12, lunch $15, dinner $18, per meal. Children ages 3–12 pay half price per meal. Meals can be purchased from Conference Services at NLC (or by contacting LHF prior to June 15, 2009).
